What causes bad breath?
Bad breath, or halitosis, is often caused by bacteria that build up on the tongue and gums. Common contributors include poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, gum disease, smoking, certain foods like garlic or onions, and medical conditions. Brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning, and regular dental visits can help keep your breath fresh.
Is there an easy way of repairing my chipped tooth?
Yes. The best treatment depends on the size and location of the chip. Small chips can often be repaired quickly with dental bonding, a simple procedure that uses a tooth-colored resin to restore the tooth’s shape. For larger chips or more visible damage, veneers or crowns may be recommended to restore strength and appearance.
Is tooth bleaching safe?
Yes, professional tooth whitening is safe when performed under dental supervision. Whitening treatments use clinically tested materials that effectively remove stains from enamel without harming your teeth or gums. Overuse of store-bought products, however, can cause sensitivity, so it’s best to follow your dentist’s guidance.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They can correct issues such as discoloration, chips, gaps, and uneven shape, creating a bright, natural-looking smile. Veneers are durable, stain-resistant, and tailored to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
Why do I need a crown instead of a bigger filling?
When a tooth is too damaged or weakened for a filling to properly restore it, a dental crown offers stronger, longer-lasting protection. Crowns cover the entire visible part of the tooth, helping restore strength, shape, and function while preventing further damage.
Why should I replace silver-mercury fillings?
Older silver-mercury (amalgam) fillings can sometimes crack, leak, or weaken over time. Replacing them with modern, tooth-colored composite fillings improves both function and appearance. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, require less removal of natural structure, and blend naturally with your smile.
What do I do if my tooth is loose or knocked out?
If your tooth becomes loose or is completely knocked out, contact your dentist immediately. For a knocked-out tooth, gently rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva and see a dentist within 30 minutes. Quick treatment gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
How do I manage dry mouth?
Dry mouth occurs when saliva flow decreases, often due to medications, dehydration, or medical conditions. To manage it, stay hydrated, limit caffeine and alcohol, chew sugar-free gum, and use saliva substitutes or moisturizing rinses. Regular dental visits can help identify and treat the cause of persistent dryness.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the gums and supporting tissues caused by bacteria in plaque. Early signs include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. If untreated, it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss. Good oral hygiene and professional cleanings are essential for prevention and treatment.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts placed in the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. They provide a secure foundation for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth and help preserve jawbone health over time.
What should I do if I lose a tooth?
If you lose a tooth, schedule a dental visit as soon as possible. Missing teeth can affect chewing, alignment, and bone structure. Depending on your needs, your dentist may recommend a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture to restore your smile and function.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in plaque produce acids that erode the tooth’s enamel. If untreated, decay can progress into the deeper layers of the tooth, causing pain and infection. Brushing twice daily, flossing, reducing sugar intake, and seeing your dentist regularly can help prevent cavities.
